This page includes original collaborative stories as well as existing stories typed up in Microsoft Word 2010 and then converted to audiobooks using a DAISY*, or Digital Accessible Information SYstem. The voice is ponderous at times, but does a pretty fine job of translating text files into audiobooks. If you have Microsoft Word 2010, download this free app and then have some fun by trying it for yourself. Once converted, please forward it to the website so it can be uploaded and offered to blind children in this digital library.

*DAISY denotes the Digital Accessible Information SYstem. The DAISY Consortium was formed in May 1996 by talking book libraries to lead the worldwide transition from analog to Digital Talking Books. Now nearly 100 non-profit organizations make up the Consortium, and actively promote the DAISY Standard for Digital Talking Books. The DAISY Standard has revolutionized the reading experience for people unable to read print due to a visual, physical, perceptual, developmental, cognitive, or learning disability. The Consortium's vision is "that all published information be available to people with print disabilities, at the same time and at no greater cost, in an accessible, feature-rich, navigable format." More information about the DAISY Consortium and the DAISY Standard is available at http://www.daisy.org/.

  • In Zulu mythology, Tikoloshe, Tokoloshe or Hili (from the Xhosa word utyreeci ukujamaal) is a dwarf-like water sprite. It is considered a mischievous and evil spirit that can become invisible by swallowing a pebble. Tokoloshes are called upon by malevolent people to cause trouble for others. At its least harmful, a Tokoloshe can be used to scare children, but its power extends to causing illness and even death upon the victim. The way to get rid of him is to call in the n'anga (witch doctor), who has the power to banish him from the area.

Another explanation is that the Tokoloshe resembles a zombie, poltergeist or gremlin, created by South African shamans who have been offended by someone. The Tokoloshe may also wander, causing mischief wherever it goes, particularly to schoolchildren. Other details include its gremlin-like appearance and gouged out eyes.

"One-Eye! Two-Eyes! Three-Eyes!"

Author : Aaron Shepard

Read by Digital Accessible Information SYstem (DAISY) - using Microsoft Word 2010 with this special application.

Once there were three sisters who lived together in a cottage in the woods. The oldest sister was no different from other people. She had just one eye, right in the middle of her forehead. The middle sister was also quite ordinary. She had one eye on her forehead, and one on each side of her face. But the youngest sister was different. Her name was Two-Eyes, and that’s just what she had.

In this playful retelling of a tale from the Brothers Grimm, a young lady with cruel sisters gets help from an old woman, a handsome knight, and some magical verses—and in the end finds out she is not so alone as she believed.
